(08/10/2022 – BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE – THE HAUGHS, TURRIFF)

LOSSIEMOUTH won for the second time this week as they outscored TURRIFF UNITED at The Haughs. Liam Archibald scored early in the second half and Adam Macleod celebrated his appearance off the bench by volleying home a second for Lossie, ahead of a consolation from Jack McKenzie that set up an unnecessarily edgy finale.

Lossie went into the game on a high after taking out Keith in midweek but were still without Fergus Edwards (work) and Ally Bellingham, Connor Macaulay and Michael Weir (all injured). Turriff suffered a home loss to Fraserburgh on Wednesday and were out to avenge the loss of both league games against Lossie last season.

In the opening stages the game followed much the same pattern as the midweek win on Wednesday, with both sides enjoying plenty of the ball without creating a whole lot of anything. Turriff aimed a few balls over the top hoping to catch out the Lossie rearguard, but the one time Ewan Clark did evade the visiting defence he fluffed his effort on goal.

A tough midfield scrap began to takes its toll on the players, with Ross Morrison going down injured before continuing, while up front Baylee Campbell put in a whole lot of effort for little return as Turriff defended stoutly.

Later chances came closer to opening the scoring, with Jack McKenzie twice drawing saves from Logan Ross while Liam Archibald forced David Dey into palming a header over the crossbar, but the half came to an end without a goal, the third game a row featuring Lossie to reach the interval without the net bulging.

HALF TIME – TURRIFF UNITED 0-0 LOSSIEMOUTH

Lossie subbed on Adam Macleod for Baylee Campbell at the interval in a bid to freshen things up and almost immediately the switch had an effect. With the Turriff defence keeping an eye on Macleod, Liam Archibald smuggled his way into the area before burying the ball beyond Dey from six yards.

Turriff looked immediately demoralised by the goal and the Coasters looked the more likely to score the second goal of the came. Macleod played in Liam Archibald for another go but his shot just cleared the bar, and his twin Ross also found himself with an opportunity in front of goal but his attempt to stretch for the ball saw him poke it over the frame of the goal.

Two incidents just minutes apart allowed Lossie to stretch their lead. Dylan Stuart was sent off for hauling down Adam Macleod as he drove through on goal, leaving Turriff to try and claw their way back into the game with ten men. Their case wasn’t helped as Lossie went to goals up shortly after. Macleod swept home a volley across the face of goal and in at the far post, leaving Dey with no chance.

The closing stages bore a strong resemblance to the previous meeting between the two sides at Grant Park, when Turriff gave Lossie a two-goal lead before trying to salvage a point. A spell of pressure from the hosts saw them control much of the final quarter of the game before ensuring the final six minutes would be a stressful experience when Jack McKenzie finally got the better of Logan Ross.

The final moments saw Lossie get the ball into the corner flag to kill the game and frustrate Turriff, with Macleod and Ross Archibald doing a fine job of running down the clock and winding up the hosts. Come the final whistle, Lossie found themselves in the top half of the table for the first time this season, ahead of a trip to Clachnacuddin next Saturday.
