Lossiemouth 2-1 Turriff United

22/01/2022 – BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE – GRANT PARK, LOSSIEMOUTH

LOSSIEMOUTH racked up a league double against TURRIFF UNITED for the first time since the Shire side joined the Highland League after winning at Grant Park. Second half goals from Connor Macaulay and Ryan Sewell left Lossie in control of the game, but a Kier Smith penalty dragged Turriff back into the game eight minutes from the end.

Lossie went into the game on the back of a solid draw with Forres Mechanics and welcomed Ross Elliott back into the starting lineup, while Michael Weir was fit for a place on the bench. Turriff hoved into view looking to avenge their loss to Lossie back in September, but took to the field weighed down by a winless streak dating back to October.

The opening stages of the game strongly resembled the first half of the recent Forres game, as two struggling sides took time to eye each other up, but it was Turriff who had the better of the first quarter of the game. Lossie – 4/7 favourites with the bookies – found themselves penned in as Turriff enjoyed plenty of possession without testing Logan Ross. When they did get down the other end of the field, Lossie looked mildly threatening and Ross Elliott rifled a shot into the side netting. The visitors should have done better with the final chance of the first half, as James Chalmers headed wide a Callan Gray corner, but the third half in a row at Grant Park ended goalless.

The second half saw Lossie much improved and early forays into Turriff territory resulted in a corner for the Coasters at the pie shop flag. Ryan Sewell swung the ball in and over the Turriff defence, and the gleaming dome of Connor Macaulay was well placed to power home from six yards. Turriff remained second best in the second half but Rhys Clark threatened an equaliser but Ross got his body behind the ball and kept Lossie in front.

Lossie doubled their lead with a little over an hour gone. Having provided the assist for the opener, Ryan Sewell remained on corner duty and from the same flag sent in another dead ball, and with Turriff concentrating on marking players in the box, no one was on the post to deal with the ball as it curled towards the back post before dropping in over the head of Tim Findlay.

Subs for both sides interrupted Lossie’s flow, with Turriff making a double sub to introduce Jordan Cooper and Reece McKeown for Dylan Stuart and Aaron Reid, while Lossie swapped in Ross Morrison for Ross Elliott. Sewell tried his luck from open play but Findlay saw it coming.

Eight minutes from time, Turriff were back in business. Keir Smith converted a penalty to wake Turriff from their slumber and they went on to force four corners on the spin, but Lossie stood firm while the home support ran out of fingernails. Down the other end, the final chance of the game fell to Ross Morrison, but the ball got stuck under his feet as he attempted to shoot from close range and the chance sailed over the bar.

Lossie travel to Keith next week, with a heavily congested mid-table leaving the Coasters just a win away from moving up a few places. Turriff are now second bottom after Strathspey picked up a point against Deveronvale, and face a nervous few weeks as All New Fort William put themselves together.

Lossiemouth 0-0 Forres Mechanics

15/01/2022 – BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE – GRANT PARK, LOSSIEMOUTH

LOSSIEMOUTH and FORRES MECHANICS played out a goalless draw at Grant Park as 2022 got off to a delayed start. Neither side approached the game in any kind of form – combined, the two sides had lost their last ten league games – and had those involved been able to shake hands on a draw at lunchtime and spend the afternoon watching Soccer Saturday in the clubby, one suspects a deal may have been done.

Lossie were without the recently departed Brodie Allen, who retired from football during the week to sign for Huntly. Also absent was Michael Weir, but Baylee Campbell returned from a loan spell at Dufftown and went straight into the starting eleven. Forres retained the seemingly-permanent services of Stuart Knight and The Fraser Brothers, while former Coaster Scott Miller returned to Grant Park to sit on the Forres bench, dressed in Can Can colours for the first time this season. Stuart Soane and Robbie Duncanson were both missing for the visitors, with pre-match rumours suggesting the pair have had it away on their toes during the enforced winter break.

To the ire of the home fans, Forres won the toss and chose to shoot towards the town end in the second half. The game – played on a cold, dry afternoon, in front of a decent crowd – was at least full-blooded and drew absolute commitment from both sets of players, but produced little in the way of anything that would have troubled a highlights reel. Forres seemed content to thrash the ball as far downfield as possible, and while Lossie were getting change out of play down the wings they failed to realise Forres were happy defending deep.

Things appeared to take a turn in Lossie’s favour with half an hour gone when travelling goalkeeper Knight injured his knee while on his own in the area. A spell of treatment saw the keeper back on his feet, but he indicated his afternoon was over and Forres were forced to send on young sub keeper Logan Morrison, who had only signed for Forres earlier in the morning and – by the look of him – was making his first trip out of the house without a parent.

Chances were at a premium through the meaty affair, with Ryan Farquhar missing from close range for Lossie shortly after the appearance of Morrison in the away goal. Lossie failed to properly test the youngster, who was forced to have Knight in his ear for the remainder of the first half, assisting with the setting up of a wall to defend a free kick that eventually sailed over the bar.

The second half saw little change to proceedings, other than them being carried out in the dark and with Scott Miller now on the field for Forres. Lee Fraser was foiled by a fine one-handed save from Logan Ross, and Paul Brindle went close just moments after, and from roughly the same spot rifled the ball into the side netting when a square ball across the face of goal could have caused much more mayhem. The best chance fell to Lee Fraser six minutes from time, but – with only the keeper to beat – the big forward screwed his shot up over the keeper and over the bar.

Forres had to play out the closing minutes with ten men when Graham Fraser collected a second yellow card, but Lossie failed to make anything of their man advantage as Forres set about making sure they at least left with a point. A rake of subs stymied the game further, and the full time whistle came as blessed relief to all concerned.

The draw ended a run of six losses for the Coasters and four defeats for Forres, but both will be concerned about the lack of goals with two sides having scored just three times between them in the league since mid-November. In particular, Forres will be particularly concerned at being winless since Charlie Rowley departed the managerial hotseat to be replaced by Gordon Connelly. Lossie can be content at having avoided another home loss to Forres, and to have snapped a six-game losing streak ahead of crucial ties with Turriff and Keith.

Lossie are at home again next weekend to Turriff United.
